Welcome to your German 101 blog!
Please feel free to use this space to post fun stuff you find as well as your blog entries for class. It's up to you to make this what you want from it, so have fun with it. Information related to blogger is available on the UNC Web site - I will invite you all to the blog using your UNC email address.
You'll notice that everything is in German - this will be a theme throughout the semester in German 101. It's just like every other blog though, so I'm sure you'll figure it out. :) Once you have figured out the login process, post a comment to this entry so I know you're good to go.
---------------
A note about typing special characters. For the ß and all the umlaut characters, you have two options. First, you can type the assignment out in Word and use the Word shortcuts for the umlauts and ß.
ß - Ctrl+Shift+& then click s
ä, ö, ü - Ctrl+Shift+: then click the letter to which you want to add the umlaut
From there, copy and paste the text into the text box for the blog.
Temporarily, the other option is to type two "s" for the ß. For the umlauts, type the following characters:
ä - ae
ö - oe
ü - ue
Good luck!

I haven't studied the German language before but have traveled to Germany and studied some of its culture and history. I know this will be a hard task to adopt a new language in college but due to the fac that my interest level is so great it should be okay. Ich bin bereit, zu gehen!
I'm a french major and I'm looking at all of these German words and feeling a bit overwhelmed but am excited to start learning another language.
Hi. It's my first time studying German also. I did have a roommate in high school who was an exchange student from Germany for a year, but he spoke fluent English.
The Ctrl+Shift+[letter] combination doesn't seem to work for me in Microsoft Word...What am I doing wrong?
In Microsoft Word, make sure that you are hitting ctrl+shift+: (colon) together then release all three, and hit the letter. It only works with vowels, and German only has umlauts over the a, o, and u.
If you're still having problems we can come up with other solutions, or take a look at it after class tomorrow.
Mein Name ist Sharan und Ich bin ein medizinischer Doktor an UNC von 2001. There were only REAL blackboards when I started college in 1977 and no computer that didn't take up an entire room so all of this is new for me! Ich bin alt!!!! I am taking German out of my own interest to learn a new language and am very excited. My plan is to get to conversational German level 5 over the next 2 years!
I studied German back in middle school but remember barely any. I had to take spanish in high school because they did not offer German. I'm hoping to get back into the flow of things so I can hold conversations with my Oma and Opa.
